The Nigerian cyberspace has suffered severe cyber-attack threats affecting public websites and portals totaling 12,988,978 which originated from both within and outside Nigeria
Also in the build-up to the General Election there were cyber-attack threats that averaged around 1,550,000 daily in the run-up to the 2023 General Elections, and the figure this skyrocketed to 6,997,277 on Presidential Election Day.
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Pantami in a statement revealed that the statistics were captured by the Government agencies, namely, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC)’s Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT), the National Information Technology (NITDA)’s Computer Emergency Readiness and Response Team (CERRT), and Galaxy Backbone (GBB)’s Security Operations Centre (SOC).
The Minister stated that there were series of hacking attempts, including Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), email and IPS attacks, SSH Login Attempts, Brute force Injection attempts, Path Traversal, Detection Evasion, and Forceful Browsing.
He however said that the Centers successfully blocked these attacks and/or escalated them to the relevant institutions for appropriate action.
The Minister had on 24th February 2023, inaugurated the Ministerial Standing Committee on Advisory Role for the Protection of Nigerian Cyberspace and ICT Infrastructure with the Board Chairman of NCC and the CEOs of NCC, NITDA and GBB as members.
