By The dwindling fortune of 9Mobile is steadily putting the fourth mobile network operator into extinction as statistics from the Nigerian Communications Commission(NCC) has revealed in its latest report.
Not even a deal with the leading telecoms operator, MTN Nigeria Plc, grant 9mobile access to MTN’s extensive infrastructure to improve its network coverage and service quality seems to have helped the ailing operator.
For instance, the NCC in its latest report for March 2025 revealed that the operator lost 318,825 subscribers in February and March 2025 alone, a very sad development for 9Mobile which once had 23.4 million subscribers and 15.7% market share in September 2015.
According to the NCC, 9Mobile could boast of 1.72 percent share of the market just falling behind Glo which had 12.01 percent share while MTN Nigeria continues to hold leadership of the market with 52.48 percent share.
Nigeria’s fourth mobile network operator, 9mobile, has continued to experience a decline in its subscriber base, with 6079 customers porting out of its network in two months.
Just like this latest report, the NCC November and December 2024 revealed huge porting loss for 9mobile, indeed out of a total of 2998 subscribers which moved from one network to another in December 2024, 2188 subscribers left 9mobile to other networks in the period.
The report stated that in November 2024, out of 4726 subscribers that switched from one network to another, 9mobile lost 3891 subscribers to other networks thereby resulting to a .total number of subscribers lost by 9mobile in two months to 6079 in an industry other operators gained insignificant outgoing porting numbers compared to 9mobile.
