The National Commissioner/CEO, Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, has expressed concern over the poor level of data protection compliance in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
Olatunji who was on a courtesy visit to the Director General/CEO, National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), Mr Idris Musa with some members of the Commission, harped on the importance of data protection, NOSDRA’s role as data protection controller and processor, and their rights as data subjects..
He noted the low level of compliance in the oil sector and proposed a capacity-building workshop on data protection and privacy. Areas of partnership on the workshop were discussed, including the development of sectoral guidelines to assist each sector in implementing the Nigeria Data Protection Act.
He also provided an overview of NDPC, highlighting similarities in the operations of NDPC and NOSDRA, such as compliance, impact assessment, remediation, and regulations.
The NOSDRA boss in his remark said that gave a brief history of oil spillage in Nigeria, an overview of NOSDRA, and discussed the agency’s activities.
He however .noted the various aspects of NOSDRA’s compliance, including the appointment of a Data Protection Officer (DPO), data storage practices, and the appropriate use of government email for official purposes.
