Nigeria’s Telecoms Industry GDP Contribution Continues Yearly Rise Amid Drops in Internet Usage

The percentage contributed to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Nigeria by the telecommunications industry is still on the increase according to the updated statistics by the Nigerian Communications Commission released yesterday, although the statistics of data usage in Nigeria is on decline.

The statistics report by the NCC, sighted by TechnologyMirror, and which is the Commission’s regularly conducted studies and surveys on the telecommunications industry, and telecommunications operators revealed that the GDP grew from 14.58%  in Q1’2024 to 16.36% Q2’2024 but the Internet Usage Statistics in Terabytes continues its July 2024 dropped, falling from 853,954.05 terabytes in  August 2024 to 850,249.09  September 2024.

According to the NCC, in its report on the number of active subscribers for data (internet) services on each of the licensed service providers utilizing the different technologies, such as the GSM and CDMA, the GSM technology continues to lead the industry in the October-September period with the GSM technology recording and increase from 130,946,321 in August to 132,406,212.

While the growth of the Internet Services Provider remains consistent under the same period at  285,702 , the Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) increased from 199,960 in August to 205,634  while the   Fixed Wireless, experienced an upward move from 8,680 in August to 9,453  in September.

The Commission further revealed more adoption of the 5G technology by subscribers who are utilizing telecommunications services per the various mobile phone generations currently deployed in Nigeria.

The report said that while there was an increase in the 5G technology use from 2.12% in August to 2.19% in September, there was a decline in 4G technology use from 44.96% in August to 46.28% September similarly for 3G technology adoption dropped from 10.24% in August to 9.32% September, however the 2G technology witnessed an increased adoption from 41.36% in August to 43.53% in September.
