By The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), an umbrella body of telecommunications companies operating now has a new National Executive Council(NEC) that was elected yesterday at its 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) to pilot the affairs of the over two decades old organisation for another two years.
But the new ATCON NEC has vowed to tackle headlong the menace of fibre optic cable cut and other telecoms infrastructure attack, which at sundry times brought the sector at standstill.
Address journalists yesterday after his entire were returned unopposed and reelected for a job well done in their previous tenure, President of ATCON, Mr. Tony Izuagbe Emoekpere revealed that one major challenge bedeviling the sector was the regular fibre optic cable cut suffered by its members saying that very soon, ATCON would be holding a multi-stakeholders engagement with critical players as well as stakeholders in Abuja, the Nigerian capital city.
According to him, ATCON would be having meetings with relevant State Government Commissioners across the 36 states of the country to tackle the menace stressing that issues of fibre optic cable cut in the country is a local thing, and therefore needs involvement of all agencies of Government that are concerned.
Emoekpere promised to rejig the enforcement of the code of ethics designed for the practice of all members noting that following the addition of over 20 other new members into ATCON that there is the need for them to understand the code of ethics of the Association.
He noted that ATCON is concerned about the business operations of its members particularly as regards to the requirements of Government agencies.
Early before the election, members harped on the need for a one-stop committee for resolving several issues affecting business operations of members such as shutting of base stations by government agencies over issues of multiple taxations.
The ATCON President after receiving comments from the members on the several challenges plaguing them ranging from that Internet Services Provider to those of the Mobile Network Providers, he appointed members who will service in the Industry Think-Tank Committee.
