The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) was able generate over ₦1.4 billion in revenue since its inception. The data regulatory agency has also received 4,701 audit reports and registered 32,888 Data Controllers and Processors of Major Importance, considering compliance rate is at only 6%.
According to the National Commissioner/CEO of NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji, Nigeria secured the prestigious opportunity to host the 2025 Network of Africa Data Protection Authorities (NADPA) Conference and Annual General Meeting.
Olatunji while delivering a keynote speech titled, “Implementing a Data Protection Law: The Nigerian Experience,” at the R.I.S.K Dubai 2024 Conference held at the Dubai International Financial Centre, Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Highlighting Nigeria’s significant strides in data protection, particularly, with the implementation of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act), 2023, he stated that the creation and adoption of the NDPC’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan for 2023 – 2027, and its relevance.
He underscored the importance of collaboration, noting the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner in Canada, Huawei Technologies in China and other major Ministries, Departments and Agencies in Nigeria. The Commission also adopted a Public-Private Partnership model in Nigeria, emulated by other Data Protection Authorities.
He disclosed that through this model, the Commission has licensed 234 Data Protection Compliance Organisations (DPCOs), trained over 1,500 Data Protection Officers (DPOs) across various sectors and established the National Certification Body to certify DPOs.
He underscored the need for robust enforcement mechanisms, effective data protection practices and international cooperation to address these challenges. Conclusively, he emphasised that Nigeria aims to protect data subject rights, and position herself as a leader in data protection in Africa, while balancing innovation and privacy.
