Faith Based Group Pushes for Inclusion in  AI Policies Formulation in Nigeria 

Faith-based organisations in Nigeria are worried about the possible impact that Artificial Intelligence is currently having on their beliefs particularly as it affects morals.

Consequently, they have called on the government to include all faith bodies in the country in the formulation of AI policies to safe-guard the interest of their beliefs saying that that AI have the capacity to erode morals from their faith.

Speaking during a training for religious leaders on Artificial Intelligence organised by the Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN) and Jamaltu Nasril Islam, Secretary of  CCN, Dr Evans Onyemara, said that AI is presently being used to deface the beliefs of people’s faith in God adding that the faith community in Nigeria needs policies that will guild against such negative things that AI can be used to generate.

While calling for polices that would checks the excesses of the use AI against the faith community, he said that “we have encountered challenges in the use of AI by a number of members of the public before now.”

Administrative Secretary of JNl, Yusuf Bida, in his presentation while stressing the impact that AI have on the faith community noted that calls have been made by JNI to government to include faith-based bodies in the formulation of AI polices in the country.

According to him, content creation using AI affects the faith community noting that there are countries that have set guidelines in the use of AI in so any aspects of their national life, and that there is the need for awareness in the congregation of faith group about the negative impact of AI as well as the good sides of it.

While noting that there is the need for Nigeria to understand importance of policies on AI as it concerns the faith communities, he stressed that the country needs AI policy framework to achieve the target of an AI faith-based policy.

He lamented that AI can generate faith scholars with pedigree within a short time that will later have consequences on the congregation adding that AI has the capacity to water-down messages from the pulpit to laity.

This training of the 2nd quarter of 2025 is to generate five pilot Mosque and five pilot Churches in Nigeria towards championing advocacy on AI policy that respect faith traditions.
