Medallion Set for Unveiling of Second Data Center with Rebranding as Digital Realty

Medallion Data Centres Limited, Nigeria’s carrier-neutral data center operator, is set to launch its second data center, known as “LOS2,” in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

This state-of-the-art facility is set to commence its services on October 24th, offering an additional one-megawatt IT capacity to its clients. Situated on Medallion’s Victoria Island campus, LOS2 will be seamlessly connected with Medallion’s existing LOS1 data center, renowned as the most interconnected facility in West Africa, serving as a critical peering point for the region.

This strategic location at the campus makes it ideal for subsea cable connections, metro fiber networks, mobile services, over-the-top providers, and Nigeria’s Internet Exchange Point (IXPN) to establish efficient, low-latency connections. This will enable connectivity providers to better cater to and expand their customer bases.

IXPN has highlighted that over 68% of its traffic is exchanged at Medallion’s Lagos data center, underscoring its pivotal role in Nigeria’s connectivity landscape. Moreover, LOS2 offers access to the 2Africa subsea cable system through diverse fiber routes to Medallion’s LKK1 facility, a critical component supporting the 2Africa subsea cable system. This enhances reliable, high-speed connections to the cable’s 46 locations across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

For more than a decade, Medallion has been at the forefront of Nigeria’s digital economy, delivering carrier-neutral data center services in Lagos and Abuja. The company has established itself as the go-to provider for fast, efficient, and cost-effective data center and connectivity services, meeting the increasing demands for time-to-market and affordability.

On October 27, 2023, Medallion will formally rebrand its services and facilities as Digital Realty. Digital Realty is a prominent global provider of cloud- and carrier-neutral data center, colocation, and interconnection solutions. The rebranding event will take place at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, and will bring together leaders from Nigeria’s telecom and IT industry to celebrate the new data center’s opening and the rebranding.

The acquisition of Medallion in 2021 was a significant milestone in Digital Realty’s Pan-African expansion strategy. The company has committed to invest over US$2 billion in Africa’s technology infrastructure over the next decade. This commitment has already seen progress with acquisitions and expansions, including the acquisition of Teraco in August 2022, South Africa’s leading carrier-neutral data center and interconnection services provider.
