By The Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy is worried that most Nigerians are still unaware of their rights as far as data protection is concern.
The Minister, Dr Bosun Tijani who expressed his concern at the Global Privacy Day Press Conference, which marked the beginning of the National Privacy Week 2024, harped on the paramount importance of privacy for all individuals and advocated for digital literacy to empower individuals in understanding their privacy rights.
While recalling the essence of the evolution of Data Protection in Nigeria, from the establishment of the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau to its transition into a Commission, Tijani noted the importance of awareness, which is paramount in building a globally competitive pool of Data Protection professionals to discharge requisite duties under the NDPA.
He appealed to the media to actively engage in disseminating information to enlighten data subjects about the significance of data privacy for individuals and the nation.
The Minister commended the dedication of the National Commissioner and the NDPC team towards ensuring data privacy in Nigeria noting that safeguarding privacy is a collective responsibility involving the government, Nigerian citizens, and the media.
The National Commissioner/CEO, Nigeria Data Protection Commission, Dr Vincent Olatunji, who delivered the welcome address noted the significance of Global Privacy Day, its role in raising awareness about data subjects’ rights and the lawful use of personal data.
