By There has been a significant drop in Nigeria’s telecoms subscriber base in the last seven months starting from March 2024.
According statistics sighted by TechnologyMirror removal of Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) was responsible for the huge drop of the number.
In his latest industry statistics report, the numbers telecoms subscribers fell from 219,304,28 in March to 154,904,827 in September, which now puts the teledensity at 71. 46 per cent.
Giving reasons for the drop in the subscription, the NCC said that many SIM are not linked to verifiable National Identification Numbers (NINs) and the rectification of a major discrepancy by a Mobile Network Operator made Nigeria’s telecoms subscriber base decrease.
Similarly, internet subscription has began to drop significantly and even as the same is reflected in broadband internet penetration for the country, which revealed that from internet subscription decreased from 93.5 million in August to 90.1 million in September while the broadband internet penetration went down from 43.16 percent to 41.56 perc3nt in September, just as internet data usage fell from 853,954.05 terabytes in August to 850,249.09 terabytes in September.
