Olatunji Harps on Essence of Protecting African’s Personal Data at Global Forum

The National Commissioner, Nigeria Data Protection Commission, Dr Vincent Olatunji has noted the importance of collective efforts among DPAs in Africa to ensure the protection of personal data of individuals across the continent.

Olatunji who was the guest speaker at the webinar on Data Protection in Africa and the Middle East, hosted by Hogan Lovells. highlighted collaborations with other Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) to safeguard the personal data of Nigerians wherever it is being processed.

Presentations during the webinar covered various aspects of Data Protection in Africa, including insights on Nigeria and South Africa, models in use, awareness and breaches, among others. Additionally, there were discussions on Data Protection in the Middle East.

In his session, the National Commissioner highlighted the positive impact of the Nigeria Data Protection Act on Nigeria’s global standing.

He underscored the crucial role of Data Protection Compliance Organisations (DPCOs) in the Data Protection ecosystem in Nigeria and emphasised the upcoming registration for Data Controllers and Processors, scheduled to commence on January 30, 2024.
