NCC Unveils Nigeria’s First National Mobile Coverage Maps, Gives Consumers Power to Choose Network Operators

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has given telecommunication’s subscribers a tool to explore where mobile networks are available, how they perform, and what users are experiencing. Coverage and speeds may vary by location and device.

Known as the National Mobile Coverage Maps, the coverage and speeds may vary depending on your exact location, device, weather, time of day, network congestion and terrain. Networks also change over time due to maintenance, or other factors, so information here is subject to change without notice.

This Nigeria’s first National Mobile Coverage Maps shows real-time network availability and performance across all operators thereby  empowering consumers to make informed choices and encourage operators to improve service quality nationwide.

Coverage Map, which measures speedtest of network shows service areas as provided by operators, where users’ devices actually receive coverage, based on crowdsourced data as well as the download speeds experienced by users, also based on crowdsourced data.

According to the Commission, there are factors that can affect network experience such as:

Device – Different phones, modems, or routers handle signals and speeds differently.

Surroundings – Buildings, walls, trees, and other obstacles can weaken signals.

Time of Day – During busy hours, more people sharing the network can slow things down.

Weather – Heavy rain, storms, or extreme conditions may sometimes affect signals.

Network Congestion – The more people using the network in your area at the same time, the slower it may feel.

The NCC stated that the map uses easy-to-understand performance bands so you can see what activities are possible with the speeds available:

Ultra-Fast (75+ Mbps) – Multiple 4K/8K streams, high-speed file transfers, AR/VR.

High-Speed (40 – 75 Mbps) – 4K video streaming, fast downloads, multiplayer gaming.

Standard (15 – 40 Mbps) – HD streaming (1080p), smooth video calls, casual gaming.

Basic (5 – 15 Mbps) – Online shopping, video calls, SD video streaming (480p).

Essential (Below 5 Mbps) – Email, messaging apps, basic browsing, music streaming.

The data collected comes directly from mobile operators every quarter. They use propagation models with standard settings for consistency. The shaded areas represent where a typical user should be able to connect outdoors or while moving in a vehicle. Indoor coverage is not included while the information of the speedtest signal comes directly from real users’ devices through crowdsourced.

It also hows the areas where people’s phones or modems actually connect to the network and pick up signal. This helps to compare what operators report with what users are really experiencing on the ground.

Similarly, the Speedtest Performance data comes from real users’ devices through crowdsourced measurements. It shows where signals are actually received and what download speeds users experience. These snapshots reflect conditions at specific points in time, and may vary depending on the number of measurements collected in an area.

Speedtest Signal & Performance Data: The results you see are based on user-collected measurements. They represent actual experience at a given time and place, but may not always reflect current conditions everywhere.

Reported Coverage: The coverage shown is based on operators’ models. While accurate, it is still a prediction and not a guarantee of service.

Your Experience May Vary: Service quality depends on factors like your device, distance from the cell site, network congestion, and terrain.
