The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), has rasies concner over huge and sensitive data in the possession gaming operators across the country.
According to the National Commissioner/CEO of the Dr Vincent Olatunji, it is imperative that operators prioritise data protection and privacy.
Olatunji who made this known remark in an Opening Remarks at a one-day workshop for gaming and sports betting operators under the body of the Association of Nigerian Bookmakers (ANB) reiterated the importance of data security for the ANB.
He also noted that as a data controller and processor of major importance, no fewer than 60 million Nigerians use their platforms monthly.
He noted that, given the data-intensive nature of gaming operations (including customer onboarding, identity verification, payment processing, and marketing communications), it is imperative that operators prioritise data protection and privacy.
He gave a brief overview of the data protection and privacy ecosystem in Nigeria and encouraged them to strengthen compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act), 2023, while ensuring that the rights of customers are adequately protected.
He also used the opportunity to highlight some of the benefits of compliance, including enhanced customer trust and confidence, as well as the negative effects of non-compliance on the sector.
This engagement forms part of the NDPC’s strategic approach towards creating awareness and encouraging compliance with the NDP Act using a sector-by-sector approach.
