The non-compliance with the Data Protection Act would have dire consequences on the Nigeria’s petroleum industry, and as such there is the need for the regulatory agency concern to adhere to the enabling laws.
According to the National Commissioner/CEO, Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), needs to have a privacy policy on their websites and appoint a Data Protection Officer.
Olatunji who made the recommendation when he led the NDPC team on an advocacy visit to the Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Engr Gbenga Komolafe, who was represented by the Executive Commissioner, Corporate Services and Administration, NUPRC, Dr Kelechi Ofoegbu.
Olatunji noted that there has been a low compliance in the Oil and Gas sector and stressing the need for a capacity-building initiatives towards raising awareness and fostering compliance.
Ofoegbu while receiving the NDPC team, on behalf of the NUPRC, acknowledged Olatunji as the pioneer National Commissioner of NDPC and recognised the critical importance of data as the new oil.
He emphasised the need to safeguard data and highlighted their efforts in ensuring data protection, citing the absence of breaches thus far.
While calling for the establishment of a Data Protection Center in Lagos, he expressed readiness to share their data protection policies while seeking guidance from NDPC saying that NUPRC is ready to collaborate with NDPC on capacity-building initiatives.
